Every day the full, Nixon-like genius of our great president becomes apparent.
He nominated someone with no judicial background to be one of the highest judges in the land. She only half-filled out a written questionaire the Senate requires of its candidates for Supreme Court, and the answers she did bother filling in were "incomplete and insulting" according to the Senate Judiciary Committee chairs.
As she was nominated on the strength of her performance at the White House as a lawyer, the Senate asked to see her record with them, as she has no other record that would show her qualified for the position. Bush Administration declined, and they asked her to re-fill out the written questionaire and again give them her White House record.
Two days later, she declines the nomination.
From the BBC:
"Not in the interest of the US or in the interest of the Bush Administration?" is a question I don't even need to ask, especially when the demand for her White House records comes as Rove and Libby are sitting in the hot seat, waiting to hear whether they will be indicted or not, and whether the hammer's gonna come down on the Vice President or not.
There is no coincidence here.
This Bush, he isn't his father (a former CIA director would have buried this shit) and he isn't any Reagan either. Of all the Republicans he could have modeled himself after, he's doing a splended job as the New Nixon, and that's just political suicide.
Sorry Jeb, old boy, but your brother's ruined your chances at the White House, so you can have your little Stepford Wife stop measuring for new curtains. It ain't gonna happen, hun.
And speaking of George and his election-guarenteeing brother, I love how FEMA just happened to be ready and waiting in Florida days before Wilma hit all those rich retirees in the south. Silly Bush. If he thinks that expeditiously saving rich white folks in Florida is going to make him look like less of an ass over the Katrina fuck up, he's got another thing coming. If nothing else, all this does to the poor bastard is prove Kanye West right, regardless of whether it's true. When you're swift to save the people of Florida and ignore the people of New Orleans, it begins to look like George Bush doesn't care about black people -- or at the very least, people who don't always vote Republican. Which, coincidentally, is usually minorities.
Can't imagine why.

From the BBC:
"In a letter confirming her decision to withdraw from the nomination process, Ms Miers wrote that continuing to seek Senate approval would prove to be a burden on the White House.
It would not be in the interests of the US to reveal details of her work within the White House, she added. "

I think I'm the only person on the face of the planet, repressive dictators asside, who realizes that the Make Poverty History campaign is absolutely retarded.
Well, not as originally conceived, but as it's been popularly accepted, starting with Brad "I'm a fucking idiot" Pitt giving an interview where he said: "We have the power to Make Poverty History in our lifetime."
Really? You have the magical, amazing, He-Man like power to not only feed, but clothe, shelter, employ, and otherwise raise the income level for all of the world's 4.5 to 5 BILLION poor people? Really? Even if every millionaire on the planet spent every penny of their fortunes to evenly distribute their wealth until every person had the same amount of money, you wouldn't make poverty history -- you'd just impoverish everyone.
It's a nice idea, Communism. Too bad it doesn't work.

"It is true that many Americans find the Commandments in accord with their personal beliefs," Justice Sandra Day O'Connor said, "But we do not count heads before enforcing the First Amendment. Those who would renegotiate the boundaries between church and state must therefore answer a difficult question: why would we trade a system that has served us so well for one that has served others so poorly?"

"That's why I ended my speech with a call on President Bush to fire Karl Rove. It is the only way the President can make it clear that he rejects Rove's effort to distort one of the most unified and patriotic moments in American history into a cheap, divisive, political applause line."

"If Mr. Bush fails to take these steps, we will stumble along, our troops at greater risk, casualties rising, costs rising, the patience of the American people wearing thin, and the specter of quagmire staring us in the face. Our troops deserve better: they deserve leadership equal to their sacrifice."
